What is it? : Total knee arthroplasty is the creation of an artificial joint by covering the worn joint surfaces with special parts made of metal and polyethylene.

Causes : Chronic knee pain and inadequacy seen in patients are the most common causes of arthritis or calcification. This arthritis is most commonly in the form of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and traumatic arthritis. Osteoarthritis usually occurs after 50 years of age. The cartilage that pads the bone softens and tears. Bones rub each other causing pain and limitation of movement. In rheumatoid arthritis, the joint becomes thicker and inflamed. Chronic inflammation causes fluid to be produced in the joint and causes cartilage damage. After trauma, fractures or ligament injuries in the knee area cause cartilage damage over time, causing pain and limitation of movement.

Treatment : The goal is to maintain active life of patients with pain and walking difficulty due to severe knee arthritis. For this purpose, drug therapy, exercise, physical therapy and inner-knee hyaluronic acid or PRP injection methods are tried first. If complaints continue despite these treatments, surgery is recommended. In surgical treatment, worn joint surfaces are removed and replaced with metal or plastic prosthesis.

After the operation, the knee exercises are started the next day and movement starts with help. More than 90% of patients with knee prosthesis have a significant reduction in knee pain and a significant improvement in performing daily activities. Today, the life of the knee prosthesis is extended to 15-20 years.
